Pablo Marquez Caraballo

Born in Valencia (Spain), Pablo Márquez Caraballo began the study of Organ, Harpsichord and Composition at the Conservatory of Valencia, ending these studies with two first prizes. During these years, he was formed under the tutelage of Montserrat Torrent and Oscar Candendo, who would influence in a decisive way his later musical career.

In 2007 he moved to France to continue his studies, thanks to the Music Institute of Valencia Scholarship, at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse, where he had the chance to work with Michel Bouvard (Organ), Jan Willem Jansen (Harpsichord), Philippe Lefebvre (Improvisation) and Guy Ferla (Composition). He finished these studies obtaining the highest score in his final exam (mention “très bien”).

In 2009, interested in the study of the Early Music, he moved to the Netherlands to pursue his studies. Being awarded with the prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme from the Dutch Education Ministry, he undertook the Organ Master studies with Pieter van Dijk at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He finished these studies with a recital on the historical organs of the Grote Sint Laurenskerk in Alkmaar (Van Covelens organ, 1511 and the Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organ,1639-1646) and a lecture of his research “Performance Practice of 16th-century Spanish Keyboard Music”. During this period, he also studied Harpsichord and Early Music at the Royal Conservatoy of The Hague with Fabio Bonizzoni, having the opportunity to work as well with Ton Koopman and Patrick Ayrton.

He also has attended master-classes with the most prominent organ and harpsichord players.

Since 2000, he is organist at the Cathedral of Valencia and since 2006 also the main organist of the Cathedral Choir. Both as soloist and as member of several ensembles, he has given numerous organ and harpsichord concerts in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, taking part of the most important festivals of music and having the chance to play in many historical instruments.

He has been awarded in the International Organ Competition “Buxtehude”, held in Lübeck (Germany), and in several competitions for his compositions “Al pie de la Cruz” (for trumpet and organ, published by Editorial Ribera) and “Autour du La. Deux esquisses pour flûte et clarinette”, performed in the Contemporary Music Festival “Hui, Hui música”.

From 2010-2012, he was assistant organist in the Nicolaasbasiliek of Amsterdam (Sauer organ, 1889), having the chance to play regularly with the Cappella Nicolai under the leading of Michael Hedley.

Since the end of 2012 Pablo Márquez is the artistic director of the Early Music Festival of the Cathedral of Valencia and more recently, since 2015, of the International Organ Festival of the Cathedral of Valencia.

Since 2016-2017 he hold the position as main Harpsichord teacher of the Early Music Department of the Conservatory of Castellón. Currently, he is the main Harpsichord teacher at the Conservatory of Valencia.

In September of 2017 he got the PhD degree in History from the University of Valencia with the highest mark “cum laude” with his dissertation “The organs of Valencia Cathedral during the 16th century to the 21st century. History and evolution”.
